Homework Policy
Daily reading is required in kindergarten. Each day, the expectation is that you read with your child for a minimum of 15 minutes. I recommend that you make it part of your weekly routine to visit your local library to stock up on lots of books! There are also reading websites available, such as Starfall, Tumble Books, and Raz-Kids.
Beginning in October, a monthly homework packet will be sent home for you to review concepts taught in school. Completing this packet is optional, but highly recommended. At the end of the month, you can choose to send the packet back to school so that I can see and celebrate the activities your child completed.
Also, there will be an additional piece of homework each night to practice reading sight words. No need to worry about this now- I will explain it fully when the time comes- but I do want you to be aware of it.
Finally, there will be occasional “extras” in your child’s folder. Some examples of “extras” are:
-Name writing practice
-Home Links from our math program
-iPad enrichment activities
- Holiday projects
Miss Lappe’s Kindergarten Homework
Reading every evening: 15 minutes each day
Monthly packet (complete 3-4 per week): 10-15 minutes per week
Practice reading sight words (starting in November): 5 minutes each day
Total homework: 20-25 minutes per evening
The amount of homework assigned is developmentally appropriate for kindergarteners. If you feel like your child is capable of doing more, I encourage you to either increase the number of minutes being read, or you can purchase extra workbooks at Barnes and Nobles, Staples, or on Amazon.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
